Ezekiel 29:1-30:26 / Hebrews 12:1-11 / Psalms 112:1-10 / Proverbs 27:17
Hebrews 12:1“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and sin which so easily entangles us and let us run with endurance the race set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”
Hebrews 12:1 compares our Christian lives to a race. The Lord wants us to live out each and every day of this race in intimacy with Him. If we are to run well, be in good shape and finish with excellence, we must be committed and able to endure the changing landscape we will surely encounter (mountains, valleys, plains, extreme temperature changes, etc…). If we are hap-hazard and careless in our journey, only relying on our own human strength and discernment, we will stumble and fall unable to complete the race. These verses challenge us to throw off any sin and weight that entangles us and slows us down – anything that separates us from our “coach”. If we are traveling with ‘excess baggage’ or too much weight on our body (sin – flagrant or hidden, anger, unforgiveness, addictions, etc…) we will run fatigued, unable to hear Jesus’ voice; missing out on the directions and strategies He wants to give us that will bring us to the end in victory. He wants us to run with confidence (faith in Him), each step directed and discerned by Him. He’s got the best plan, the best path, and, He deeply desires to lead us as we live out our journey. So, let us run each day of our lives with endurance, patience, faith and hope. Let us press into the Lord, know Him well, consistently and deliberately seeking after Him, listening to His voice, following His directions. As we do, we will find strength, peace and joy each step of the way.
