Standout Verse:

2 Peter 1:5-8

“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness, love.  For if these things are yours and abound, you will neither be barren, nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to DILIGENCE – meaning, careful, persistent, pursuit of Him (as opposed to hap-hazard, inconsistent, or erratic). As we diligently walk with God, we are called to add to our lives VIRTUE – meaning goodness and moral excellence.  This ideal isn’t so we achieve a “good grade” in morality, but because God has wonderful plans for our lives that will be confused and thwarted if we knowingly walk in sin and ignore the parameters He has given to keep us safe.

To virtue, we are to grow in KNOWLEDGE and understanding of who God is, His ways, His designs, His thoughts.  The way we do this is by spending time with Him personally – in prayer, in His LIVING and ACTIVE Word, learning about His character, able to recognize the sound of His voice, growing in our understanding of His unshakeable truth.

As we grow in knowledge, we will naturally begin to grow is SELF-CONTROL.  As we feed on the wisdom, clarity and good sense He offers, we will begin to quickly identify evil and will be more and more determined to turn from it as we are able to uncover the enemies’ plans to ensnare our hearts and destroy our lives

As we grow in our relationship with our Heavenly Father, our lives will begin to “work”, peace will begin to permeate our hearts no matter what we are going through, and we will feel the great safety that comes as we walk closely with Him.  We’ll become determined to PERSEVERE in our relationship with Him no matter what as we realize more and more that apart from Him we are lost!

Lastly, as we continue growing in God’s ways, we will develop genuine BROTHERLY KINDNESS and LOVE for others stemming from an authentic desire to see others experience the same life giving freedom that our awesome God offers each and every one of us!
