Revelation 2:2-5 &7
“I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot hear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and found them liars. And you have persevered and have patience and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless, I have things against you, that you have left your first love. Remember, therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from it’s place unless you repent. (V.7) To him who overcomes, I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.
John is writing to the church in Ephesus. They were doing well in certain areas – particularly in the areas of “good works”. They were active and effective in Godly service, they were patient, and rejected evil. However, the issue they needed to confront was the fact that they had “lost their first love” (their relationship with the Lord). They’d become “works based”, mechanical and routine. Their works had stopped flowing out of a love relationship with the Lord and had become duteous and love-less.
WORKS WITHOUT RELATIONSHIP will eventually become dry and ineffective…we can only run on our own efforts for so long, until we eventually run out of steam. God promises us that when we “seek FIRST His Kingdom” (which begins with our personal relationship with Him) our lives will begin to produce great fruit and we’ll serve others from a place of authentic love and supernatural strength that only God can give.
