2 Kings 22: 2 AND 2 Kings 23: 13 & 25
“And he did what was RIGHT in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David. He did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. (2 Kings 23:13) Then the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow Him and keep His commandments and His testimonies with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people took a stand for this covenant. (V. 25) Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.”
In the midst of a polluted culture arose an amazing young king – Josiah. He was brought up in an atmosphere of incredible mixture and spiritual confusion. His father and grandfather had been agents of radical idolatry and were single-handedly responsible for the widespread turning of people’s hearts away from God during both of their reigns. Josiah hadn’t been raised well and came from an extremely tumultuous, confused family.
However, even in the midst of being part of a very broken family line, Josiah came on the scene and was responsible for the greatest revival of that time. Upon discovering the Book of the Law (which had been hidden away for years in the Temple), and listening to the words, ways and truth of God that were outlined in it, Josiah’s heart took a radical turn away from the cultural “normal” he and all the people were so familiar with. God’s words had pierced his heart and he was determined to “clean house” and rid the land of it’s idolatrous, anti-God practices and get back on track with the ONE TRUE GOD – the God of their fathers; the God who saved them; the God who wanted to give them life!
Josiah’s inspiring life can teach us SO much. Two things in particular that should fire us up and cause us to walk in strong spiritual determination are these:
1. Because Josiah had studied and knew God’s truth, he was able to identify the crazy things people had accepted as normal and was courageous enough to take a hammer to the destructive things the people had allowed into their lives. He trashed anything and everything that came against God’s best for His people. JUST LIKE JOSIAH, WE NEED TO KNOW GOD’S TRUTH SO WE ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY and TRASH THE CRAZY, OUT OF CONTROL THINGS OUR CULTURE ACCEPTS AS NORMAL – self-centered, over-sexualized, spiritually mixed and confused lifestyles that tear us away from a GROWING THRIVING RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR HEAVENLY FATHER.
2. If you have been raised in a home that doesn’t know or walk in God’s truth, YOU CAN BE STRONG, COURAGEOUS, AND (BY GOD'S POWER AT WORK IN YOU) BREAK THE GENERATIONAL SINS YOUR FAMILY HAS WALKED IN. YOU CAN DETERMINE (JUST LIKE JOSIAH DID), “NO WAY, I’M NOT GONNA GET RIPPED OFF! I AM DETERMINED TO LET GOD’S TRUTH AND HIS DESIGN DETERMINE MY FUTURE AND THE FUTURE OF MY CHILDREN. It’s going to take strength and courage, but it’s 100,000% worth it.
LET’S NOT ALLOW THIS MIXED UP CULTURE TO INFLUENCE ONE MORE DAY OF OUR LIVES.
LET’S LET JOSIAH’S STORY INSPIRE US TO SEEK GOD WITH EVERY OUNCE OF OUR HEART, SOUL, MIND AND STRENGTH SO WE CAN HAVE HIS TRUTH FIRMLY ESTABLISHED IN OUR HEARTS ENABLING US TO WALK CLOSELY WITH HIM AND BECOME THE PEOPLE HE MADE US TO BE!
