2 Kings 23:31-25:30 / Acts 22:22-23:10 / Psalm 2:1-12 / Proverbs 18:13
2 Kings 24:20
“For because of the anger of the Lord this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, that He finally cast them out from His presence.”
Today in this nation we celebrate FREEDOM, and honor those who have fought for the liberty that we now enjoy. It's very easy to take for granted the price that has been paid so that we can live in a free land that isn't subject to tyranny, dictatorship or an evil monarchy. We celebrate to REMEMBER and not allow ourselves to go backwards and to ever become subject or enslaved to anything or anyone who would offer us anything less than freedom, liberty and justice for all.
In our reading we see that after the great king Josiah dies, the people forget. They forget that Josiah fought hard to bring freedom to God’s people by trashing idols and ending evil practices that had crept into the land. As they forgot, they began to allow themselves to become enslaved once again to lifestyles of mixture and compromise. This ultimately leads to their capture and exile.
Just as there are political forces that want to take our freedom, there are spiritual forces that want to do the same thing in our lives by polluting us with cultural junk and dividing our hearts with half-truths and worldly thinking. The awesome news is that “GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN US THAN HE WHO IS IN THE WORLD!” THIS MEANS OUR SPIRITUAL FREEDOM IS NOT ONLY A FIGHT WORTH FIGHTING, IT’S A FIGHT WE CAN WIN WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE!! We don’t have to fall prey to those things that would enslave us and rob us of the freedom God offers us in our lives, our marriages and our families. God’s ways lead to FREEDOM and ABUNDANT LIFE!
GALATIANS 5:1 – “IT IS FOR FREEDOM THAT CHRIST SET US FREE. STAND FIRM, THEN, AND DO NOT LET YOURSELVES BE BURDENED AGAIN BY THE YOKE OF SLAVERY!”
