Esther 1:1-3:15 / 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 / Psalm 35:17-28 / Proverbs 21:19-20

Standout Verse:

Psalm 35:15-16,19-20

“But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered together; attackers gathered against me, and I did not know it; they tore at me and did not cease; with ungodly mockers at feasts they gnashed at me with their teeth. (V.19) Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without cause.  For they do not speak peace, but devise deceitful matters.”

It can be a challenge to read verses like these in Psalms and not picture “other people” when it refers to the “enemy”.  For those of us who have never found ourselves in a situation where someone was literally ready to attack us, steal our land and kill us, it can be hard to wrap our heads around what Psalms like these mean for us TODAY.  Try reading the Psalms with this perspective in mind:

1 Peter 5:8 says we must be on guard because the enemy, Satan, walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.  He is the ultimate enemy of our souls – he hates us without cause, speaks confusion over us and devises all kinds of deceitful strategies to separate us from the Lord.  He is our “unseen foe” - the “ruler of the darkness of this age”.

Sometimes, because we can’t see him, we forget about him, and his presence (in the world and in our lives) is minimized…this is exactly what he hopes will happen because we’ll live in a way that is “unguarded”, asleep and vulnerable to his attacks.  We need to know about him, his strategies and the weapons he uses (lies, deceit, shame, discouragement) so we can identify them quickly and ask the Lord to help us stand against them.

WE MUST KNOW GOD'S TRUTH so we are well-equipped to call Satan's bluff and quickly remove our feet from any path he’d try to entice us to walk down and shine the light on his destructive lies.  We NEED TO BE WISE CONCERNING EVIL, BUT WE NEVER NEED TO LIVE IN FEAR.  Identifying and knowing about the enemy and his strategies empowers us and only makes us stronger and more able to live steadfast, safe and peaceful!  We MUST remember, “GREATER IS HE IN US THAN HE WHO IS IN THE WORLD” –SATAN IS NO MATCH FOR OUR GREAT AND AWESOME GOD!!
