Ecclesiastes 4:1-6:12 / 2 Corinthians 6:11-7:7 / Psalm 47:1-9 / Proverbs 22:16
Standout Verse: 2 Corinthians 6:14
“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
This is not a verse that calls for Christians to be rude, unkind or standoffish toward unbelievers. That would be in direct conflict with the things Jesus taught us about loving others as ourselves. It is God’s kindness that leads us to repentance and our job is to reflect that very nature of our Heavenly Father to anyone we come into contact with. We must always be ready to share God’s goodness to anyone knowing and hoping that at any point their hearts can turn toward Him and their lives can be forever changed.
With that said, we know well that we become the company we keep (Proverbs 12:26, 13:20), that evil company corrupts good habits (1 Cor 15:33) and that God hates mixture. This verse is a call to wisdom and clear thinking BEFORE we are even faced with a choice that could possibly lead to our own personal compromise. Whether it be a commitment to a close, deep relationship, a business deal, or a marriage, with someone who doesn’t walk with the Lord, we need to know that God clearly warns us regarding this matter all through His word.
We must be guarded about who we allow to influence our thinking and our decisions NOT because God is a “meanie”, but because Satan, the enemy of our souls, LOVES to confuse us and get us off track with the Lord and will use anything he can to do so. Close relationships, where commitments are made and our hearts are vulnerable, are one place where he will diligently work to confuse and break us. This can only happen IF we make choices that put us in an unguarded state.
Let’s be wise, staying close to the Lord, obeying the simple things He tells us so we can stay safe, experience real peace and live the lives He dreamed for us as He knit us together!
