Genesis 13:1-15:21 / Matthew 5:27-48 / Psalm 6:1-10 / Proverbs 1:29-33

Standout verse:

Matthew 5:29-30
“If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it far from you.  For it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish than for your whole body to be cast into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you.  For it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish than your whole body be cast into hell.”

Sounds pretty dramatic, doesn’t it?  We live in a world where some people would see a passage of Scripture like this one and say. “relax…calm down for Pete’s sake, you can’t expect yourself to be perfect.”  The ways of the world allow little pockets of “pet sin” to hang around in our lives making it seem like it’s “no big deal as long as it’s not hurting anyone”.

God’s view is totally different.  He calls us to deal radically with sin because He knows it separates us - first from Him - and then it negatively affects every other relationship in our lives (marriage, parenting, friendships, etc). The enemy loves sin (both flagrant and secret) because he knows the same thing – sin separates us from God.  He loves it when that happens.  He knows he has no real power over us if he can’t mess up our walk with the Lord.  But, if he can get us to “relax” a bit and convince us that our sin can stay, we will fall right into his plan.

Here’s what God says about sin: It had to be decisively dealt with so it can go – all the way!  He wants our hearts to be clean and clear and in the light with Him and all of our other relationships.  This is what He wants for us and this is what He offers.  It’s clear and simple. Growing, fruitful relationships are radically worth fighting for!
