Numbers 20: 7-8 & 10-11
“Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying, “Take your rod: you and your brother Aaron and gather the congregation together. SPEAK to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield it’s water, thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock and give drink to the congregation and the animals.”
(v. 10) And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock: and he said to them, “Hear now you rebels! Must WE bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod: and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and the animals drank.”
Again the Israelites were in the wilderness with a real and legitimate need: water. Water wasn’t a luxury, it was a necessity. As the people began to complain to Moses and grow more and more angry toward him, he called out to the Lord for help. God was fully aware of the Israelites needs and had done one miracle after another to show them that He was their provider. Yet, as they faced another challenge, they’d all but forgotten all the things they’d seen with their own eyes over and over (The Red Sea, the Cloud and Fire, water from the rock, manna, etc…).
God said to Moses, “SPEAK TO THE ROCK”. WOW! That would have been pretty amazing. IF Moses would have obeyed God’s command, all he would have had to do was speak to the rock and water would have come out. That would have been an awesome, undeniable miracle that would have pointed only one place: God and His mighty hand of provision.
However, out of frustration, Moses decided to take matters into his own hands and chose to strike the rock. Because God was gracious and knew the people needed water desperately, He allowed water to come out despite Moses’ disobedience. Sadly, Moses was denied access into the Promised Land due to his disobedience.
When God specifically calls us to do something, let’s just do it. Let’s trust in His strategies and plans. He knows more than we do and wants to show His awesome power in ways that may not make sense to us entirely (remember we have finite, human thinking!). We need to trust and obey Him ALL THE WAY! When we do, we will experience His BEST – exceedingly, abundantly beyond what we could ever think or imagine!
