I Samuel 15:1-16:23 / John 8:1-20 / Psalm 110:1-7 / Proverbs 15:8-10

Standout Verse:

I Samuel 15: 3,9 & 19

“Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have and do not spare them.  But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child and do not spare them. (V.9) But Saul and the people spared Agag (king of the Amalekites) and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings and all that was good and were unwilling to utterly destroy them.  But everything despised and worthless they destroyed.”

God couldn’t have been clearer in His instructions to Saul on defeating the Amalekites and taking their land.  God knew if the Israelites allowed anything to survive the battle, they would become snares drawing the hearts of His people away from Him toward the gods and idols of the Amalekites.  God wasn’t being harsh with His command to destroy everything, He was simply calling His people to take the land and settle in it fresh and clean WITH HIM AT THE CENTER.  The only way to do this was to decisively destroy anything that would come against that.

Saul totally disregarded this clear instruction form the Lord and took King Agag and some of the choice cattle – because “he was unwilling to utterly destroy them”.  Wow.  Saul made a clear-cut choice to do the opposite of what God had specifically called him to do.  This choice stemmed out of a pride that said, “Thanks God.  I hear You clearly, but I will go my own way – I’ve got it from here.”  This choice and state of mind cost Saul his destiny and his position of King was passed to another whose heart was sold out to the Lord (David).

We must be careful not to do the same thing when it comes to sin in our lives. Once the Lord has shown us some behavior, attitude or activity that needs to be ended in our lives we must be decisive in ending that behavior and not allowing some type of compromise to remain.  UNWILLINGNESS TO UTTERLY DESTROY SIN IN OUR LIVES WILL KEEP US FROM ENJOYING GOD’S BEST FOR US.

Thank You Lord that we can learn from Saul’s life – a great example of “what not to do”.  Thank you that we can learn from Your Word and choose to stay close to You, listen and obey –ALL THE WAY!  Help us hear Your voice clearly and walk with You closely so we can become the people You created us to be!  Destiny’s fulfilled, rather than destiny’s lost.
